mwololo-backup
A personal backup utility. It copies the operator's own files from their own computer to their own Google Drive account. Nothing else.
What it does
- Creates dated archives of a local configuration and home directory tree, and uploads them to a folder inside the operator's own Google Drive.
- Keeps encrypted snapshots of the same tree with
restic, a rolling retention window of 7 daily, 4 weekly and 6 monthly snapshots, and a size check on every upload. - Runs unattended on the operator's machine and prints a report of the last run.
Who uses it
One person: the operator, who is also the developer. There is no sign-up, no public service and no third-party users. The tool is not offered to the public and creates no accounts.
How it reaches Google
mwololo-backup authorizes against a single Google account — the operator's own — with a
single OAuth scope, https://www.googleapis.com/auth/drive. That scope is what
Google requires to create, read and delete files in Drive. Within the account, the tool
only reads back and cleans up the files it created itself, in the folder it manages. It
requests no other Google service: no Gmail, no Calendar, no Contacts, no profile data.
